The Pix-Star FotoConnect is a wireless digital picture frame. That means this frame connects wirelessly to the internet so you can send pictures to it without having to download them directly to the frame via a physical connection. The frame itself has its own unique email address so you can email photos directly to your frame. Connect to your favorite online photo album, or even the files on your home network, and see them displayed instantly. Pix-Star FotoConnect is our Top Ten Reviews Gold Award winner because it has many sharing options, has several features and doesn't have a subscription fee.
The LED screen on this digital frame is of a decent size at 10.4 inches when measured diagonally. It displays in the common photograph aspect ratio of 4:3 and has a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. This wireless digital frame has built-in universal plug-and-play software and can connect with compatible media servers and computers.
Wi-Fi picture frames sometimes have subscription fees you need to pay to use the sharing feature. However, the Pix-Star FotoConnect allows you to use this service without an additional monthly fee. You can log on to your profile with Pix-Star and set up your digital picture frame using the Wi-Fi capability. The built in Wi-Fi connects your frame to your home network to play photos directly from the albums stored on any computers connected to the network.
If you have pictures online, Pix-Star makes it easy to transfer those photos to your frame. This wireless digital picture frame connects directly to Facebook, Instagram, Picasa, Flickr, SmugMug, Shutterfly and photo RSS feeds. It can also connect to lesser-known photo sharing sites, including foreign websites, and the manufacturer keeps a full list of these sites and frequently adds to the list at the request of customers.
You can add your pictures from Facebook as well as pictures from your friends' profiles. The whole album shows up on the Pix-Star website, but does not give you the option to delete pictures within the album. However, you can delete individual pictures in a Facebook album once they appear on the Pix-Star wireless digital picture frame.
In addition to receiving images on your Pix-Star FotoConnect frame, you can send photos to your online email account. When you do this, you can send pictures to your friends, your web albums or a new email address, all from your frame. When typing in the email address from your frame, you must press the arrow keys to navigate from letter to letter. The keyboard is in alphabetical order instead of a standard QWERTY keyboard, which can take a little longer to navigate.
The frame comes with a power cord, a remote, a kickstand and a manual. You can either use the stand or hang this digital frame on the wall. The navigation buttons are on the back of the screen and are all the same shape and size, which makes it more difficult to navigate through the menus while you press buttons. It's easier to use the remote that comes with the Pix-Star FotoConnect than it is to use the buttons on the back of the frame. When you use the remote, you can see the buttons and the screen at the same time.
The Pix-Star FotoConnect is compatible with JPEG, PNG, BMP and GIF files. When it comes to memory compatibility, you can use the USB port or the SD/MMC/SDHC card slot. You can also take advantage of the unlimited online storage. The Pix-Star FotoConnect frame itself has 2GB of internal memory.
This Wi-Fi digital photo frame doesn't have a touchscreen. Although a touchscreen can be nice for navigation, it leaves fingerprints on the screen, so the lack of a touchscreen isn't necessarily a bad thing. The Pix-Star FotoConnect is formatted for English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese and Dutch.
As mentioned before, the layout of the keyboard is alphabetical instead of the standard QWERTY keyboard. Moving up, down and from side to side with the arrow keys on the remote to spell out email addresses is tedious, but you can save the email addresses in your contact list so you don't have to type them more than once.
From Pix-Star's website, you can store images, check your inbox and select which photos to share with your frame. You can also delete photos and connect to your online albums. From the frame's menu you can play all of your albums, check your inbox, look at local albums, see your web albums, access the file manager, change the settings and listen to web radio. You can listen to audio and internet radio stations on this frame, which isn’t the case with all wireless photo frames. In addition to seeing pictures, you can see weather forecasts in your location as well as the forecasts for countries and cities around the world. When you set up your Pix-Star FotoConnect frame, you can determine what time the Wi-Fi digital photo frame will automatically turn on and off. This is a power-saving feature that keeps the frame from running when no one is around to watch it. From the menu, you can also monitor how much of the internal memory you're using.
You can rotate the photos, but you can't rotate all of them at once. You can put the frame on its side, allowing you to see your photos both in portrait and landscape view; however, the controls don't adjust to reflect a portrait orientation.
The Pix-Star FotoConnect is the only wireless digital picture frame on the market that includes a built-in spam filter to keep unwanted photos from displaying. The frame will not display unsolicited albums or images.
In addition, this frame will not play video, and when you delete a photo, it won't delete immediately. When deleting photos from the online account, the pictures will continue to show up on the Pix-Star photo frame for several minutes. Be aware of the delay as this could be frustrating if you're in a rush. In most cases, however, the pictures update quickly enough to avoid causing a problem.
Pix-Star has a manual that walks you through setting up your wireless digital picture frame; however, it doesn't go into much depth. If you run into any problems, Pix-Star offers email support, FAQs sections and video tutorials. The company is prompt in returning emails, but it is still less convenient to have only one avenue to contact customer support. In addition to tech support, Pix-Star offers a one-year warranty on its picture frame.
